ASALATU WASALAMU ALAYKA YA RASULLALLAH Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam

Hadrat Fatima (Radi Allah anha)
The Princess of Paradise.

Glancing at the imposing and Beloved Family of the Last Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta'ala alaihi Wa sallam) of Allah (Subhanah wa Ta'ala), our eyes lower down in the respect of Sayyidah Fatima (Radi Allah anha), the youngest daughter of the Blessed Prophet (Salla Allahu Ta'ala alaihi wa sallam) and Hadrat Khadija-tul-Kubra (radi Allah anha) and the paramount figure in the history of Islam.

She is one that innocence adores her, chastity ventures pride in her and modesty, with folded hands, stands before her.

Introduction.

Her name is Fatima and Zahrah (having gleaming and luminous face), Batool (aloof from the worldly pleasures), Tahirah (chaste and modest) are her titles. Her very titles endorse her position as a religious minded, ideal and prestigious figure among the entire woman in the world.

Birth.

She was born in the divine environment of Makkah when the Blessed Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta'ala alaihi wa sallam) had passed 35 years of His Blessed life, at the time when the quraish were renovating the house of Allah (Subhanah wa Ta'ala).

Childhood to Adolescence.

Hadrat Sayyidah Fatima (Radi Allahu Anha) was very calm, serene and sober even in her childhood and she never participated in games etc. She would spend most of her times in the exalted company of her Parents and ask such questions, which bespeak her intelligence and maturity. She showed her fully detachment from all allurements and fascinations of worldly life.

Being the daughter of the beloved Prophet of the Universe (Sallall Allahu Ta'ala Wa alaihi wa sallam) and due to the blood that was running in her veins, she was bestowed with exceptional characteristics and distinctions. The precious bouquet of guidance of the Beloved Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta'ala Alaihi wa sallam), which spruced her personality up and groomed, her hidden potentials remained with her for the rest of her life.

Social boycott.

When Sayyidah Fatimah (Radi Allahu anha) was about 12 years old, when she had to face very painful circumstances in the form of social boycott. From the tenth month of the seventh year of Huzoor (Salla Allahu Ta'ala alaihi wa sallam) mission till the tenth year, for a period of 3 years, the Beloved Prophet (Salla Allahu Ta'ala alaihi wa sallam), along with his family and the whole of Banu Hashim was confined within a pass at some distance from Makkah called 'Shabi Abi Talib'.

The supply of food was almost stopped and the people in confinement faced great hardships. The condition of children was especially miserable. Due to the scarcity of food the people were, at times, forced to eat leaves of trees. Neither Hadrat Muhammad (Sallall Allahu Ta'ala alaihi Wa sallam) nor his companions were permitted to return to their homes. This confinement told upon the health of Sayyidah Fatima (Radi Allahu anha), which persisted throughout her life.

Death Of kind and loving mother.

Pains and problems did not divert their direction even after the episode of confinement and social boycott. Hadrat khadija (radi Allahu anha), the Mother of Hadrat Fatima (Radi Allahu anha), left this world in the favour of heavenly World. This was a great shock to Hadrat Fatima (Radi Allahu anha) because she had been deprived of a loving and kindhearted Mother. Whenever she felt lonely and bereaved Hadrat Hafsa (Radi Allahu anha), Hadrat Aisha (radi Allahu anha) and Hadrat Asma (radi Allahu anha) would come and console her.

Migration

When the non-Muslims of Makkah became more violent in their enmity and they inflicted more and more sufferings on the Muslims. The blessed Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta'ala Alaihi Wa sallam), at the behest of Allah (Subhanah wa Ta'ala), migrated from Makkah to Madina.

A few days after reaching Madina, the Beloved prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta'ala alaihi Wa sallam) sent his slaves Hadrat Abu Raafi and Hadrat Zaid bin Haritha to bring his family members. Hence, Hadrat Fatima, Hadrat Umme Kulthoom, Hadrat Saudah, Hadrat Umm-e-Yamn (Radi Allahu anha) and Hadrat Usama bin Zaid (Radi Allahu anhu), migrated to Madina in the company of Hadrat Raafi and Hadrat Zaid (Radi Allahu anho)

Her Marriage

At the time of migration, Hadrat Fatima (Radi Allahu anha) had reached the age of puberty. First of all, Hadrat Abu Bakr Siddique (Radi Allahu anho), sent the offer of marriage for Hadrat Fatima (radi Allahu anha) to the Blessed Prophet (Sallall Allahu alaihi Wa sallam) remained silent.

Then Hadrat Umar (Radi Allahu Anho) expressed his willingness and in the reply the Blessed Prophet (Sallall Allah Ta'ala alaihi wa sallam) said, ?It will be on Allah's (Subhanah Wa Ta?ala) Command.? At last, the Blessed Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta'ala alaihi Wa sallam) betrothed Hadrat Fatima (Radi Allahu anha) to Hadrat Ali (Radi Allahu anha).

On the day of the marriage, the Beloved Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta'ala Alaihi Wa sallam) ordered Hadrat Anas (radi Allahu anha) to call Hadrat Abu Bakr, Hadrat Umar, Hadrat Uthman, Hadrat Abul Rehman bin Auf and the Muhajireen and Ansaar (Radi Allahu anha). The Blessed Prophet (Salla Allahu Ta'ala alaihi Wa sallam) recited the wedding sermon himself, and said to Hadrat Ali (Radi Allahu anha) with a smile playing on his face:

'' I married Fatima to you for four hundred Mithqaal silver jointure. Do you agree'' Hadrat Ali submitted- ' Yes, of course.'

At the time of marriage, Hadrat Fatima (Radi Allahu anha) was nearly 19 years old, whereas Hadrat Ali (Radi Allahu anha) was almost 21 years old.

Dowry.

The detail of dowry items 'which' the Beloved of Allah (Subhanah Ta'ala) gave to His daughter is as under:

1 A couch or bed.
2 A pillow of leather stuffed with date bark.
3 A water skin
4 Bedding
5 Two pots.
6 One grindstone
7 Two bed sheets.
8 One Prayer Mat.

Punctilious Daughter

In the battle of Uhud, the Prophet of Islam (Sallall Allahu Ta’ala Alaihi Wa Sallam) also sustained serious injuries on his head and cheek but he was protected by Allah (Subhanah Wa Ta’ala) through the unrivalled devotion of his companions, one of whom shielded the Beloved Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta’ala Alaihi Wasallam) from the arrows of the enemy by his bare hands. In this state of confusion, some one shouted that the Beloved Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta’ala Alaihi Wasallam) had been killed.

When this news reached Madina, Hadrat Fatima (Radi Allahu Anha) along with some other ladies, disregarding the horrible picture of the battle, reached the battlefield of Uhud. She felt solace on seeing the Beloved Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta’ala Alaihi Wasallam) alive. She bathed the wounds of her father again and again but the blood did not stop to flow particularly from the forehead. She ultimately, burnt a palm-mat and put its ashes into the wound, which stopped the flow of blood.

Once the Blessed Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta’ala Alaihi Wa sallam) was offering prayer in Ka'aba Sharif. Uqba bin Abi Moit put the tripe of a camel on the back of the Blessed Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta’ala Alaihi Wasallam) while he was in prostration

Someone had told Hadrat Fatima (Radi Allahu anha) about this nasty action of the non-Muslims. She became restless, rushed towards Ka'aba Sharif and removed that tripe from the back of her father while those mischief-makers were laughing and clapping around. She looked at them and said “You will be punished for this ill gesture by the Lord of Lords.” Her words proved true and after some years in the battle of Badr all those wicked people met their ends in a humiliating way.

Her Generosity

Hadrat Ibn-e-Abbas (Radi Allahu anho) reports that once Hadrat Ali (Radi Allahu anho) irrigated a garden throughout the night and he got some barley as wages.

Hadrat Fatima (Radi Allahu anha) took some barley, ground them into flour and prepared food. When they intended to eat, just then an indigent knocked at the door and said: “I am hungry.” Hadrat Fatima (Radi Allahu anha) gave all the food to that indigent. She then took some more barley, ground some more flour and prepared food from it. She had just finished cooking when an orphan came begging with hunger. Again all the food was donated to the orphan. Then she ground the remaining barley into flour and cooked food once again.

Meanwhile a polytheist captive asked food in the name of Allah (Subhanah Wa Ta’ala). Again all the food was given to him and all the family members remained hungry. Allah (Subhanah Wa Ta’ala) was so pleased at this noble gesture that he revealed this verse in the favour of this Blessed family:

“And they feed, for the love of Him, the poor, the orphan and the prisoner''. (AL-Dahr, 29:8 )

Once an old man, from Banu Solaim tribe embraced Islam. The Beloved Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta’ala Alaihi Wa sallam) asked him: “Do you have some fortune?” He submitted: “By Allah, I am the poorest one among the three thousand persons of Banu Solaim.” Huzoor (Salla Allahu Ta’ala Alaihi wasallam) took a glance at his companions and said: “Who will help this poor?” Hadrat Saad bin Ubadah stood up and said:

“O Messenger of Allah! I have a dromedary which I will give him.”

Huzoor (Sallall Allahu Ta’ala Alaihi Wa Sallam) said: “Who is there among you to cover his head?” Hadrat Ali (Radi Allahu anho) stood up and put his turban on the head of that Bedouin.

The Prophet of the Universe (Salla Allahu Ta’ala Alaihi wa Sallam) again asked who will arrange food for him. Hadrat Salman Farsi took the Bedouin along with him and went out to arrange food for him he asked from some people but found nothing from them. At last, he knocked at the door of Hadrat Fatima (Radi Allahu anha) house. “Who is there outside?” She inquired. Hadrat Salman Farsi (Radi Allahu anho) narrated the whole story and submitted:

“O daughter of the True Messenger of Allah! Arrange some food for this poor man, please.” Having tears in her eyes, Sayyida Fatima (Radi Allahu anha) said: “O Salman, by Allah! We have been starving for the last three days. Both children have slept hungry but I will not let you go empty-handed. Take my shawl of Fatima the daughter of Muhammad (Sallall Allahu Ta’ala Alaihi Wa Sallam) and give something to this poor man.”

Hadrat Salman (Radi Allahu anho) took the Bedouin and the shawl to the house of a Jew and told him the entire story. Startled by this news, he cried out: ''O Salman! By God, these are the people about whom the torah have given information. Be my witness, I believe in the father of Fatima.” He gave some grain to Hadrat Salman (Radi Allahu anho) and also returned the shawl to Sayyida Fatima (Radi Allahu anha).

Resemblance between the Father & the Daughter

Sayyida Fatima (Radi Allahu anha) took after her father Nabi (Salla Allahu Ta’ala Alaihi Wa Sallam) from head to toe. She resembled her father in looks, manners, gait, articulation and character. In other words, she was a living picture of her father, Huzoor (Sallall Allahu Ta’ala Alaihi Wa Sallam).

Hadrat Aisha (Radi Allahu anha) says: "I did not see any one resembling the Blessed Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta'ala Alaihi wasallam), regarding all manners, more perfectly than Fatima, the daughter of the Messenger Of Allah."

On another occasion Hadrat Aisha (Radi Allahu Anha) narrates: "Then came Fatima whose gait resembles that of the Beloved Messenger (Sallall Allahu Ta'ala Wasallam)." (MUSLIM)

The Beloved Prophet (Salla Allahu Ta’ala Alaihi wa Sallam) loved Hadrat Fatima (Radi Allahu anha) very much. It was the routine of the Beloved Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta’ala Alaihi Wa sallam) that whenever he returned from a journey: after offering prayer in the Masjid, he went straight to Hadrat Fatima (Radi Allahu anha) house. In short, the love of the Beloved Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta’ala Alaihi Wa Sallam) for his cherished daughter was really enviable.

Hadrat Sayyida Aisha (Radi Allahu anha) reports:

“Whenever she visited the Beloved Prophet (Salla Allahu Ta’ala Alaihi Wa Sallam), he stood up for her, kissed her and seated her on his place.” (Tirmidhi)

The following event also throws light on the extreme love of the Beloved Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta’ala Alaihi Wa sallam) for his most favourite daughter Hadrat Fatima (Radi Allahu anha).

Once, Hadrat Ali (Radi Allahu anho) recieved a proposal to marry the daughter of Abu Jahl. When Hadrat Fatima (Radi Allahu anha) became aware of this fact, she went straight to the Beloved Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta’ala Alaihi Wasallam) and apprised him of the current circumstances.

The Beloved Prophet (Salla Allahu Ta’ala Alaihi Wa sallam) mounted his pulpit and delivered the following sermon whose each and every word bears witness that the Messenger of Allah (Subhanah Wa Ta’ala) loved his daughter to the core of his heart:

“Banu Hashim have sought my consent to marry their daughter to Ali bin Talib. I do not give the consent; I do not give the consent. I do not give the consent. Yes, if Ali wishes, he should first give divorce to my daughter and then marry their daughter. Because my daughter is a part of my body. The thing which disturbs her disturbs me and the thing which distresses her, distresses me.” (Muslim)

Hadrat Fatima (Radi Allahu anha) love for the Beloved Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta’ala Alaihi Wasallam)

My dear Islamic Sisters!. And brother!....

....... You can simply perceive the intensity of love of Hadrat Fatima (Radi Allahu anha) for the Beloved Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta’ala Alaihi Wasallam) that she did not smile after the death of her August Father till she breathed her last breath. (Usdul Ghaba, V: 5, P: 634)

It is also reported By Sayyida Aisha (Radi Allahu anha) that while the Blessed Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta’ala Alaihi Wasallam) was on his deathbed, he whispered to Hadrat Fatima two times. The first time she wept and the second time she smiled. On inquiry she replied:

“He (Sallall Allahu Ta’ala Alaihi Wasallam) informed me that he was leaving this world due to this disease. So, I began to weep, then he informed me that I would be the first in his family to meet him, at this I gave a smile.” (Tirmidhi)

.......... Firstly, this Hadith, without any exaggeration, testifies to this belief that the Blessed Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta’ala Alaihi Wasallam) not only knows His own, but even the time of the departure of his Family and followers from this world as well.

Secondly, the Blessed Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta’ala Alaihi Wa sallam) made Hadrat Fatima (radi Allahu anha) cognizant of her immediate death, but instead of being worried and tense she started smiling because this was only her death, which would reunite a kind Father and cherished daughter. Hence, she preferred pangs and agonies of death to the luxuries and cosiness of life just to enjoy the tender feelings of paternal affection in the Garden of Eden.

The Best Housewife

As Hadrat Fatima (Radi Allahu anha) was a quintessence of the Messenger (Sallall Allahu Ta’ala Alaihi Wasallam) of Allah (Subhanah Wa Ta’ala), she always preferred to do all the housework herself. Her hands got blistered due to working on a grindstone; her clothes became dirty for sweeping the floor.

Hadrat Ali (Radi Allahu anho) reported that one-day Hadrat Fatima (Radi Allahu anha) went to her father’s house to ask for a slave or a servant who would perform all the chores but the Blessed Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta’ala Alaihi Wasallam) was not home, She apprised Hadrat Aisha (Radi Allahu anha) of her condition and came back. At night, the Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta’ala Alaihi Wasallam) went to their house and said:

“I shall tell you a thing which is better for you than a slave?” “When you go to bed”, recite, 33 times Subhanallah (Glory to Allah), 33 times Alhamdu Lillah (All Praise on to Allah), and 34 times Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest). This will be better for you than a servant.” (Bukhari, Muslim, Tirmidhi)

Chief of the Woman

Once Sayyidah Fatima (Radi Allahu Anha) fell ill, The Beloved Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta'ala Alaihi Wasallam) inquired about her health. She replied that she was not well and there was no food at home to eat. The blessed Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta'ala Alaihi Wasallam) said:

''Daughter! Are you not pleased over the fact that you are the chief of the woman of the worlds?'' Hadrat Fatima (Radi Allahu anha) replied; '' Father! Then where stands Sayyidah Maryam? '' The Beloved Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta'ala Alaihi Wasallam) said:

''She was the chief of the woman of the worlds of her time while you are the chief of the woman of the worlds of your Era. And your husband is chief in this world as well as in the hereafter''

Wrath of Fatima (Radi Allahu Anha) is the wrath of Allah (Subhanah Wa Ta'ala)

Hadrat Ali reports that the Blessed Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta'ala Alaihi Wasallam) said to Hadrat Fatima (Radi Allahu anha) '' If you become furious, Allah also becomes wrathful; and if you please, Allah also pleases''.(Usdul Ghaba, V:5)

Piety & Purification

Allah (Subhanah Wa Ta'ala) sent down a verse expressing the piety and purification of all the members of the Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta'ala Wasallam) family. '' Allah only desires, O! The members of the family of the Prophet! That He may remove from you every uncleanness and purify you well after cleaning you thoroughly.'' (Al-Ahzab, 22:33)

Unique entertainment

One day Hadrat Uthman-e-Ghani (Radi Allahu Anho) invited the Blessed Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta'ala Alaihi Wasallam) to dinner. Accepting the invitation, the Blessed Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta'ala Alaihi Wasallam) accompanied by his companions, proceeded towards Hadrat Uthman's (Radi Allahu anho) residence. As the Beloved Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta'ala Alaihi Wasallam) started to move, Hadrat Uthman (Radi Allahu anho) began to count the steps of the Blessed Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta'ala Alaihi Wasallam). ''Why are you counting my steps?'' inquired the Blessed Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta'ala Alaihi Wasallam). He submitted, ''I will set one slave free for each of your step to my house.'' Afterward, Hadrat Uthman (Radi Allahu anho) materialised his wish.

When the dinner was over, Hadrat Ali (Radi Allahu anho) came back home wearing melancholic expression on his face. ''Why are you so worried?'' asked Hadrat Fatima (Radi Allahu anha). Hadrat Ali, in reply told her the complete story. ''Go and invite the Blessed Prophet along with all his companions'' concluded Hadrat Fatima (Radi Allahu anha).

In short, the Blessed Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta'ala Alaihi Wasallam) escorted with his companions advanced towards Hadrat Ali's dwelling. On the other side, Hadrat Fatima (Radi Allahu anha) placing the pot on the hearth invoked her Lord (Subhanah Wa Ta'ala). '' O Allah (Subhanah Ta'ala!) Tour this bonds maid has invited your Beloved Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta'ala Alaihi Wasallam) and His companions. Now, let me not feel ashamed in front of them.''

Allah (Subhanah Wa Ta'ala), entertaining her invocation, filled the pot with Heavenly Food. When all the guests were eating food, the Blessed Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta'ala Alaihi Wasallam) informed them that Allah (Subhanah Wa Ta'ala) had sent this food from Heaven to us. Hearing this, a surge of ecstasy ran through the guest. Hadrat Fatima, the queen of the Universe, again invoked Allah (Subhanah Wa Ta'ala) in the state of prostration:

''O Allah! Uthman-e-Ghani had freed one slave for every step taken by your Beloved Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta'ala Alaihi Wasallam) to his home. You may free one sinner in the Blessed Prophet's Ummah from the Fire for the sake of every step he had taken to my House.''

When Hadrat Fatima (Radi Allahu anha) finished her supplication, Hadrat Jibrail (Alaihis Sallam) came to the Beloved Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta'ala Alaihi Wasallam) and submitted:

''Allah (Subhanah Wa Ta'ala) has sent this glad tiding to you that He, granting the invocation of your Beloved daughter, has freed one thousand wrong doers from the Fire regarding your every step to her house.'' (Jamiul Mo'jizaat)

(I was welled up with emotion writing the above) ''Allah O Akbar''!!

Progeny

Hadrat Fatima (Radi Allahu anha) gave birth to two sons - Hadrat Imam Hassan (Radi Allahu anho) and Hadrat Imam Husain (Radi Allahu anho) and two daughters, Hadrat Sayyidah Umm-e-Kulthoom and Sayyidah Zainab (Radi Allahu anha). Some Historians have added the names of Imam Mohsin and Sayyidah Ruqayya as the progeny of Hadrat Fatima (Radi Allahu anha) while others have omitted them. Those who have included their names do also agree that they had died in their prime age. Therefore, there is not much about them in History.

It is also one of the excellences of Hadrat Fatima (Radi Allahu anha) that her progeny resumed the line of descendence of the Blessed Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta'ala Alaihi Wasallam) and it will remain up to the last Day. The Beloved Prophet (Sallall Allahu Ta'ala Alaihi Wasallam) said:

''All the offspring of Adam (Alaihis Sallam) is attributed to their paternal relatives except the progeny of Fatima, that I am their Father and their paternal link.''

Contended Soul Departs

When the time of Sayyidah's death approached she told Hadrat Asma, the daughter of Omais that she did not like the way in which the funeral of a woman had been carried to the grave. (Because a sheet was used to cover the dead through which the body was visible). Hadrat Asma told her that in Habsha (Ethiopia) she had seen a different custom that they placed the branches of trees on the bed and then spread the sheet over them. Hadrat Fatima (Radi Allahu anha) liked this custom and advised that after her death she and Hadrat Ali should give bath to her body and should not seek assistance of any third person.

Hence, Hadrat Fatima (Radi Allahu anha) was the first woman in Islam whose dead body was also covered in the above-mentioned way. She left this world on the 3rd of Ramadhan 11 AH at the age of 30. Hadrat Ali (Radi Allahu anho) led her funeral prayer in Jannat-ul Baqi. (Usdul Ghaba)

(Please note: No one can touch the body of his dead wife, as the death of a woman voids their marriage. it is also a special attribute of Hadrat Fatima (Radi Allahu anha) that her death did not nulify their marriage. hence, Hadrat ali (radi allahu anho) remained her husband even after her death)

This Pious Lady who paid undivided attention to this point that she should remain hidden from the glance of strangers during her life time and was anxious that no person should see even her dead body wrapped in the shroud, will enjoy such a status on the day of resurrection that a herald will announce :

''O People! Lower down your gaze so that Fatima (Radi Allahu anha) the Daughter Of Muhammad (Sallall Allahu Ta'ala Alaihi Wasallam) may pass from here''. (Usdul Ghaba, V: 5, P: 524)
